What are the exercises in the French Foreign Legion’s psychometric tests?

It is highly recommended to practice before taking these tests. Since they are eliminatory, failing at this stage would end the recruitment process. Preparing seriously increases your chances of succeeding and continuing your path to the Foreign Legion.

The psychometric test consists of 3 parts to be completed in 25 minutes:

    1. A spatial test
    2. A non-verbal test
    3. A numerical test

    1. The spatial test

Spatial tests evaluate the ability to mentally manipulate objects in space, an essential skill in the military, which requires technical aptitude and good visual perception. These exercises involve identifying rotations, symmetries, or perspectives, and understanding how an object changes when transformed or viewed from a different angle.

Here is an example of a spatial exercise you might encounter during your psychometric tests. In this exercise, a cube pattern is presented, and your task is to identify the cube that corresponds to this pattern. Note that there is only one correct answer.

    2. The non-verbal test

Non-verbal tests evaluate your ability to analyze patterns, shapes, or sequences without using language or calculations. These exercises rely on visual logic and pattern recognition, making them accessible to everyone regardless of language level. They are designed to measure skills such as perception, problem-solving, and the ability to establish relationships between different elements.

The following exercise is a fairly common type of test. Your task will be to complete a grid (or matrix) by choosing from the available options. To find the correct answer, you will need to identify the logic that connects the rows or columns, then complete the missing sequence.

    3. The numerical test

Numerical tests evaluate your ability to recognize patterns and relationships between numbers. These exercises require mental calculation, mathematical logic, and deduction skills. They are often used to measure your ability to solve numerical problems quickly and efficiently.

During the test, you will encounter number sequences similar to the following example. A sequence of numbers is presented with a question mark indicating the missing number. To find it, you will need to identify the logic that connects the given numbers and apply this rule to complete the sequence.
